SeaTwirl recently visited Aberdeen and the conference Floating Offshore Wind UK 2018. The takeaway from the trip, that encompassed a visit to a wind farm in addition to presentations and mingling at the conference, was that there is a lot going on in the British wind power industry and that many have realized the potential in floating wind power.

“As an island nation surrounded by deep waters and tradition within in the offshore industry, the UK has all the prerequisites to become a leading player in floating wind power. My impression from Aberdeen is that there are many that are hard at work to make that vision into reality”, says Gabriel Strängberg, CEO of SeaTwirl.

That impression was strengthened by a recent report that Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult had put together on behalf of Crown Estate Scotland. According to the report, floating wind power can help create up to 17 000 new jobs by 2050 and become global export sector.

“At a time when the need to tackle climate change has never been greater or starker, and policy support for innovation, industrialisation and regeneration of high-quality jobs is increasing, the floating wind opportunity ticks all the boxes. Thousands of UK jobs, global exports and clean and secure energy generation are all up for grabs – if the right government support is in place”, says Sian Wilson at Crown Estate Scotland to OffshoreWind.biz.
