Why offshore wind power?

Wind power is a renewable source of carbon-free energy. The future needs sustainable solutions and we are ready to take on the challenge. SeaTwirl is developing a floating wind turbine for the ocean. SeaTwirl’s wind turbine is easier to build, install and maintain than traditional offshore wind turbines. Our vision: To become a leading supplier of floating wind turbines.

A unique feature of SeaTwirl’s design is how the buoyant force of the ocean supports the weight of the turbine.

Easy access

Parts requiring maintenance are inside the generator housing, which is easily accessible, right above water level and below the wind turbine. 

Lower costs

The simplicity of the construction makes it less expensive to manufacture and maintain than traditional wind turbines.

Top 5 reasons for offshore wind power

#1. Oceans – an untapped resource: 71% of the Earth is covered by ocean – 92% of which is more than 200 metres deep. Unlike conventional wind turbines, SeaTwirl's floating wind turbines can use these deep waters. Let’s go deep!
#2. More powerful wind: There is much more energy available offshore than onshore, when wind speed doubles, energy is increased eightfold. Offshore wind is stronger and more reliable. Research shows the potential to achieve 30% more output from offshore wind than from onshore because ocean winds are 5%-10% stronger.
#3. New locations: Floating structures can be placed at greater depths than conventional offshore wind turbines (as a rule of thumb, conventional wind turbines cannot be placed at depths of more than 50 metres due to construction costs). SeaTwirl's floating wind turbine offers greater flexibility when siting a wind farm.
#4. Locally-produced power: Offshore wind power enables production of electricity close to urban areas (often near the coast). Locally-produced power means reduced transport losses and lower infrastructure costs.
#5. Great market potential: There is a great market potential in offshore wind power. Energy experts estimate that 7% to 11% of Europe's electricity will be generated by offshore wind by 2030. The projected total output is believed to be 24.6 GW in 2020 and 86 GW in 2030.

2007: Inventor Daniel Ehrnberg successfully tests the first prototype
2012: SeaTwirl AB is founded and raises its initial investment
2015: S1 is successfully commissioned in the sea outside of Lysekil, Sweden
2016: SeaTwirl raises capital and begins trading on Nasdaq First North under the ticker STW
2018: Joins the Ocean Energy Scale-Up Alliance (OESA) and receives a grant of MEUR 0,5 
2019: Receives EU grant of MEUR 2,5 
2022: Receives financing from Energimyndigheten of MEUR 5 
2023: The concession in Norway gains legal force
